School Events - Year 5 Visit Handsworth Fire Station

Pupils from Year 5 learned about the dangers of fire in an exciting but thought-provoking safety event at Handsworth Fire Station.

The children travelled in a special coach and minibus laid on by West Midlands Fire Service to the station, the first purpose-built community fire station in Europe.

They visited the interactive 'Red Hot Education Station' where they put on fire-fighter jackets and helmets and found out what it is like to be in a dark, smoke-filled room.

Then, the children stood behind a special screen to witness the effects of a chip pan fire, one of the main causes of house fires. Film footage also brought home the devastating effects of fire and how prank calls and arson attacks have resulted in people dying and being seriously injured.

Sophie, from Year 5G, said, "The smoke room was the best because it felt like a real fire. I learned not to play with matches and never to make prank calls to any of the emergency services because it ruins people's lives."
