Special Event - Karate for Self Defence

October 2007

During October a visitor came to teach all of Key Stage 2 about self defence using karate. He was a 3rd Dan black belt, which means he is very good at Karate!

We learnt how to defend ourselves by using our hands and feet. We were shown what part of our hand and foot to use by hitting and kicking the mat in three different areas.

He told us how to get someone off us when they are holding onto us by using different twists, turns and holds.

We also learnt how to count to ten in Japanese.

Before we finished he showed us a selection of weapons they used in combat. We saw a Samari sword; Split stick and some weapons that were originally used for farming.

Finally we meditated for about 2 minutes, bowed our heads to the 3rd Dan teacher and that was the end.

Thank you to Mrs. Bailey who organised a Karate lesson for each KS2 class through the Sainsbury voucher scheme. It was a very enjoyable lesson and we worked hard!
