Our Allotment
In February 2011 Ms Davies and Miss Marshall thought it would be a great idea to start a small allotment at Parkfield Community School to help children to learn about food production, growing and healthy eating.
Once a location had been found within the school grounds, Ms Davies, Miss Marshall and a group of Year 4 pupils then set about ordering the raised bed planters, green house, water butts and finally the seeds for the fruit and vegetables that would be grown there.
The allotment has been an amazing success. It has produced so many vegetables that we have been able to give them to the school kitchen to cook and serve for lunch but it also demonstrated to the children beautifully how plants grow and eventually end up on your dinner plate.
Frank, our fabulous gardener, is now helping to maintain the allotment and is striving to expand it in terms of area and produce different types of vegetables that we grow so we can supply the kitchen on a more regular basis, for a fraction of the cost of buying them in. As the allotment itself develops we hope to extend the involvement of more pupils across the school and hopefully some parents.
Watch this space…no, watch the allotment!
Here are some quotes from our green fingered gardeners:
- "It's fun and I learnt how to grow potatoes. We have to water it so things don't die". Sajid, Year 5
- "I watched the plant grow. Some grew fast, some grew slow". Mahek
- "I like the allotment very much because we can do planting". Jermaine
- "I enjoyed tasting what I planted". Imanie
- "I really had fun filling the pot with soil". Hawwaa
