Forest School

Reception children enjoying Forest School.

Forest School began as we know it in Denmark in the 1950's – where the concept is entrenched in the school curriculum and culture.

In 1994 Forest School began in England and since then various local education authorities have adopted it to a lesser or greater extent.

Chivenor J&I School was the first school to adopt Forest School in the Erdington area in 2007, under the leadership of qualified practitioners Hilary Roach, Lead Mentor and Alicia Cristobal Grander, Castle Vale Environmental Trust.

Forest School takes place in an outdoors location, either Plantsbrook Nature Reserve, Sutton Park or the Castle Vale conservation area. A programme of approximately fifteen, two-hour sessions are undertaken by a group of ten children. Transport to and from the venue is by minibus.

Children are dressed in all weather suits and wellington boots. Sessions take place in all weathers. The only time we cancel is due to high winds, for safety reasons.

Learning is gained through play which, where possible, is child led and initiated. Taking safe risks is encouraged through the implementation of Forest School rules.

Children learn to use tools; saws, loppers, secateurs, potato peelers. There is an emphasis on games and social interaction. Time is given to sharing drinks and food – not chocolate and biscuits on a cold winter's day! Some children experience cooking over a real fire – toasting marshmallows or making and cooking damper.

Forest School is proven to benefit the 'whole' child's development, particularly emotional and social well-being, cooperation, motivation, independence and an appreciation and respect for the environment.

Participants look forward to coming to school and being part of the Forest School experience.
