School Event - A Chef visits Year 6

13 October 2010

Year 6 were lucky enough to have a visit from a chef from The Birmingham College of Food. The children made a tasty potato salad with lots of lovely fresh ingredients. The children were shown how to chop the vegetables safely without losing any fingers! The children all tasted their food and thought it was delicious.

Report by Shania, 6K:

"In the last two weeks both Year 6 classes have had a cooking lesson. The chef explained how to make potato salad.

The children listened carefully because the chef told us that all the ingredients would have been available during the Second World War. We are learning about the Second World War in our history lessons. He told us that popular additions to the potato salad then, were spam and corned beef.

He tried to jog our memory, by asking us about the bridge and claw method. This is a way of chopping vegetables safely and the chef taught us this method when he visited us in Year 5.

The potato salad ingredients were healthy. I really enjoyed the lesson and I think everyone learned something new."

When I grow up, I want to be a chef.

I want to be a chef also!

Carefully chopping the red pepper.

This is not too difficult!

This tastes so good!

Yum, yum!
