School Event - 5M Go Tree Planting

25 March 2011

On Friday the 25th March, the children from 5M started out on an exciting journey with Mrs Roach and Miss Maxey, carrying several spades, Silver Birch and Cherry saplings and of course refreshments!

We were led along the road by Alicia Cristobal Grande to the allotments in Castle Vale. Alicia is the Environmental Officer for the Castle Vale Environmental Trust and is in charge of developing a section of the allotments.

We began the morning with a quick break for toast and juice. Once we had recharged our batteries we carried the equipment and a few more tree saplings, including a wheelbarrow full of more spades, to the perfect place to plant the new trees.

After a quick demonstration from Alicia, 5M got stuck in, digging holes and pulling out lumps of stones and rocks. When the holes were deep enough, the saplings were placed carefully into the holes and the soil was replaced. After an hour of hard work and plenty of digging, 5M could admire their newly planted row of trees.

The children worked extremely hard and really enjoyed planting new life. They even carried a few saplings back to school to plant outside the school gates!! Well done 5M!
