School Event - Fire Safety Talk for Year 5
November 2009
Members of the local fire brigade talked to Year 5 about the importance of fire safety. Children were told about a variety of fire hazards, how to prevent fires and how to respond to a fire. They were also warned about the many problems caused by hoax calls.
The first thing we learned about was where smoke alarms should be fitted in our house. It is very important to have a smoke alarm at the top of the stairs and another downstairs. The firemen told us that if we did not have smoke alarms at home, we could telephone the fire station and they would come and fit them free of charge.
We were warned about the dangers of candles and how they should not be placed near curtains. The firemen gave us very useful information and we learned a lot that we could pass on to our families. ![]()

The firemen talked about smoke alarms and how you should always have one upstairs. We were told that it is not a good idea to put one in the kitchen or it would keep going off, if toast burned or food overcooked. If there really was a fire, the smoke would travel up the stairs anyway. The firemen explained that because of this, a smoke alarm should be fitted in the hallway. He also talked to us about the importance of stop, drop and roll if our clothes go on fire. ![]()
