Baskerville School provides much more than just education at 'normal' school times - we have a lot of out-of-hours and additional services, such as Residential Provision, After School Clubs, Summer Scheme, and more.
There is accommodation for 24 students grouped in four family groups; two large with 8 beds and two smaller ones for the students who are more independent.
Each group is staffed by a mixture of residential social workers and combined residential/school staff. The family groups are led by either a senior residential social worker or a team leader. In addition there is a Head of Care and a Deputy Head of Care and three night-waking staff. The staff are there to support students by promoting existing abilities in all areas of independent living skills.
Accommodation consists of a lounge, kitchenette or kitchen, single bedrooms a bathroom and a shower, toilets, and staff office in each unit and staff sleep-in rooms on the bigger family units.

Our Main Aim
While providing a safe and homely environment, students are encouraged to participate in expressing their own needs
and wants. Staff endeavour to provide students with the opportunity to gain experience in all areas of independent
living skills. Students are encourages to participate in the completion of general tasks that ensure the smooth
running of the residential family groups.
Meals
The larger family groups mainly eat their evening meals in the dining hall, but opportunities are also provided for
students to prepare meals for their own family group some times. Themed meals like Caribbean and Chinese meals
are popular. Students in the smaller family groups, plan their weekly menu, do the shopping, prepare and serve the
evening meal as part of their daily programme. Students can also prepare snack suppers and have their breakfast in
the residential accommodation.

A Typical Day
A residential student's day begins between 7.00am and 7.30 am. when students complete their personal hygiene/dressing
skills. On a weekly basis, the students have various tasks to complete before and after breakfast. School begins at
9.00am. From 3.30pm students relax after school, have a drink and do their homework.
Evening Activities
Students hold a weekly meeting in their family groups when they discuss and decide on the activities they would
like to do. These include, using on-site facilities, like the gym, personal skills such as learning to play an
instrument or to ride a bike, or using local neighbourhood facilities such as the gym at Queen Alexandra College,
the local golf course in Harborne or road safety and travel training. Trips out into the community include, ten
pin bowling, cinema, Youth Club, Swimming, skiing, or other physical activities. Students work for ASDAN
accreditation in personal, social, health and citizenship skills and some take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award
Scheme.
From 8.30pm onward students occupy themselves by listening to music, reading, watching television and preparing for bed. Most students are asleep by 10.00pm or before.

The school operates two After School Clubs per week - one on Tuesday from 3.30pm to 6.00pm and one on Thursday from 3.30pm to 6.00pm.
All students are invited to attend the After School Clubs and will be allocated either a Tuesday or Thursday dependent on their ability. There is a charge of £5 per session and parents/carers have to be able to arrange to pick the student up from school at 6.00pm. Unfortunately we have not been able to negotiate for Education Transport Department to transport students home from After School Clubs.
We have four members of staff who work late on Tuesday and Thursday evenings to care for the students. The staff also plan the sessions in conjunction with the Assistant Head Teacher, Curriculum.

The school operates a Summer Scheme for the first week of the school summer holidays. The scheme is co-ordinated by Edward Dowell, Students Services Co-ordinator, and is staffed by experienced staff from the school.
Each day of the scheme is structured in a similar way to the school day and activities are planned well in advance so that a detailed timetable can be given to all students who are participating in the scheme. In the main, the activities take place on-site in the mornings and off-site in the afternoons. This means that the students are in a familiar surrounding in the morning and can be prepared for a change of environment for the afternoon.
The summer scheme is always enjoyed by both students and staff and is a great way for students to experience different activities.
